Our Philosophy

At Country Bears, children grow through relationships; with people, animals and the natural world. We create a place where every child feels safe, heard and valued, and they are celebrated for who they are.  Where the child’s curiosity is nurtured through meaningful connections and joyful exploration.

We see nature as a place of learning, that invites wonder, empathy and care. Children learn through exploration of Papatūānuku, discovering the world through hands‑on experiences, spontaneous adventures and unhurried play. Our animals and insects, our environment and resources are treated with kindness and respect, modelling the way we care for each other.

Our Core Values

Kindness: Kindness guides how we care for each other, our animals and all living things, our environment and ourselves.

Connection: Relationships are the foundation of learning; reciprocal, warm, trusting and inclusive.

Curiosity: We nurture children’s natural desire to explore, question, imagine and discover.

Belonging: Every child, whānau and kaiako is seen, heard and valued for who they are.

Care for the living world: We honour Papatūānuku and all living things through gentle, intentional practice.

Our Commitment

At Country Bears, children are at the heart of everything we do. We create a nature‑rich environment where play is unhurried, curiosity is celebrated and learning grows from children’s interests, identities and relationships.

Our kaiako are present, responsive and nurturing - listening deeply, observing thoughtfully and supporting children to explore with confidence. We provide clear, consistent boundaries that help children feel safe as they take risks, make decisions and learn from their mistakes. We embrace all weather, all seasons and all the elements.

Children learn alongside animals, insects & bugs, natural materials, loose parts and open spaces that invite imagination and discovery.

We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi by fostering a bicultural community where every child and whānau experiences mana, belonging and connection. Relationships with whānau, kaiako and the wider Kumeū community enrich our learning and strengthen our sense of place.

Our Centre’s Unique Place in the Community

For over a generation, Country Bears has been a trusted, long standing part of the Kumeū community; a place known for its warmth, relationships and family like atmosphere. Our strength lies in our people: long standing kaiako, strong ratios, deep relationships with whānau and a culture of genuine care. We are proud of our history and equally committed to our future.

We continue to evolve while holding tight to what matters most: kindness, connection, nature and a learning environment where children thrive and are free to be themselves. Country Bears remains a place where families feel welcome, children feel at home and kaiako feel valued - a community built on heart, belonging and shared purpose.
